PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Playground Buddies: 

Children from our 5th /6th class become Playground Buddies for one lunch break each week. They create, monitor and play games with the children in the Junior yard to ensure they are having an active and fun break time.

Active Breaks:  

All classes take part in active breaks throughout the school day.  This includes Go-Noodle, Just Dance, Cosmic Kids and a variety of classroom movement ideas.  On a wet day, if pupils cannot go outside at break time, extra time will be given to movement breaks in the classroom.

Active School Walkway

There are 14 different stations located around the school grounds. There are suggested activities that can be completed at each station including simple exercises and  fundamental movement skills. The Active Flag committee took each class on a tour of the walkway and explained its use  and the options that are available to the pupils and teachers when using this wonderful resource.

There are also a range of worksheets that can be used making it an excellent opportunity for the pupils to practice their orienteering skills. Children are also encouraged to walk around the new Walkway during break times when having chats with their friends or when thinking up of ideas for projects.

Active Homework: 

The Active Schools Committee created a week of Active Homework for every pupil to complete in the month of June. Pupils were encouraged to complete an activity each day with their family or friends. 

Learning on the Move - Skip Around Europe

We have been taking part in the Active School Flag initiative 'Skip Around Europe' for 4 weeks!!. All classes, from Junior Infants to 6th Class, have been taking part in this skipping initiative. Each day, the classes went out to the yard and took part in a few minutes of skipping. Each skip counted as 1 kilometre. Each class chose a destination in Europe to skip to using the handy resources chart included with the initiative. Each child counted their skips, these got added to a class total, and they then checked to see if they reached their destinations for the day. Some classes were skipping all the way to their destination countries and back!
